Dr Megan Munsie is a stem cell scientist who has combined her extensive technical expertise with an interest and understanding of the complex ethical, social and regulatory issues associated with stem cells in research and in the clinic. Megan regularly provides advice and information to Australian researchers, academics, politicians, government agencies, media, patient advocacy groups and community members on stem cell science and associated issues. She was a member of the successful collaboration that derived the MEL series of human embryonic stem cell lines in one of the first NHMRC licensed projects in Australia, and in 2000 was the first person to demonstrate that stem cells could be made from ‘cloned’ mouse embryos. In addition to having worked for over fifteen years in the Australian stem cell field, Megan also has more than ten years experience as a clinical embryologist in IVF clinics around Australia. She has recently joined Stem Cells Australia, the new ARC special research initiative on stem cell science, to lead the Ethics, Law and Community Awareness Unit.
