Club COSMOS: The physics of science fiction

Hosted by Wilson da Silva, featuring popular physicist and best-selling author Lawrence Krauss, and award-winning astronomer Bryan Gaensler. Our panel tackled all things sci-fi. We found out whether we can really beam up, what’s at the edge of the universe and why post-apocalyptic zombies aren’t as scary as understanding what the universe is made of. We chatted over a beer to the experts about why physics really is stranger than fiction.

Our panel included:

Lawrence Krauss is a theoretical physicists and best-selling author of Quantum Man, a biography of the physics genius Richard Feynman, Atom and the Physics of Star Trek. He is a foundation professor of the School of Earth and Space Exploration, and director of the Origins Project at the Arizona State University.

Bryan Gaensler is the author of Extreme Cosmos, an award-winning astronomer and passionate science communicator, who is internationally recognised for his groundbreaking work on dying stars, interstellar magnets and cosmic explosions. A former Young Australian of the Year, NASA Hubble Fellow and Harvard professor, Gaensler is now an Australian Laureate Fellow at The University of Sydney, and is also director of the Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics. In 2011 he was awarded Australia’s Pawsey Medal for outstanding research by a physicist aged under 40.

There’s a different event “The physics of science fiction” advertised at the same time and venue, see http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=261790813850038 . Can you clarify which is on, or are there really two talks happening concurrently?

    • Petra Dzurovcinova says:

      Hi Hugh,

these events are the same. Thank you for pointing to us the Facebook event. We will update our entry to correspond with Club Cosmos one.

Are you planning to attend this event?

      Petra

  2. Elspeth Gordie says:

These two events are entangled on a quantum level
