Book Club: Leviathan

RiAus hosts a bi-monthly Book Club for those keen to explore, rediscover and get excited about science-themed books, new and old. We started 2010 with Leviathan, an alternative history steampunk adventure by Scott Westerfeld.

Set at the outbreak of World War I,Leviathan follows Alek — the son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne — fleeing from assassins in a mechanical war-walker, and Deryn, a Scottish girl crewing the Leviathan, a gigantic living airship evolved specifically for war.

With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both of their lives forever. Full of non-stop action, this steampunk adventure is sure to become a classic.

This event was hosted by Adelaide-based science fiction novelist Sean Williams.
