Ideas streaming (November 2011) The Adelaide Review

Ideas streaming (November 2011) The Adelaide Review

A video conferencing forum, TEDxAdelaide, allows participants to break through geographical barriers to knowledge and offers thinkers in Adelaide a global platform to share their ideas.

The TED experience is coming to Adelaide with a full day event to be held at The Science Exchange.

TEDx events adhere to a general theme and format guided by TED. However, they are independently organised and adapted to foster the ideas of the local host community. Dr Kristin Alford of Bridge8, in collaboration with RiAus, produces TEDxAdelaide which will this year be accompanied by a special event, TEDxYouth@Adelaide.

This year’s theme for TEDxAdelaide is “Ideas from the edge worth spreading” and will include a mix of well known and new speakers as well as TED videos streamed from around the globe. The event organisers hope it will be a catalyst for the exchange of game-changing ideas and conversation between locals and global participants. Last year’s TEDxAdelaide drew almost 200 people to the live sessions and up to a thousand more viewed the online video stream.

TEDxYouth@Adelaide, an extension of TEDxAdelaide, will focus on youth aged 12 to 22 years. The program will include a mix of interactive group activities and a selection of TED videos. This event will occur parallel to a series of youth events held around the world to celebrate TEDxYouthDay with the aim of empowering young leaders and igniting their curiosity. While incorporating the global theme of TEDxYouthDay, “Play, Learn, Build and Share”, TEDxYouth@Adelaide will have its own theme of “Sharing”.

TED is a global online forum that streams a large variety of videos called TEDTalks. These include demonstrations and short presentations, all about 18 minutes in length. TEDTalks have challenged many visionaries of our time, such as Sir Richard Branson and Bill Gates, to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes.

According to organisers, the diversity of TEDTalks show that disciplines thought to be worlds apart, such as science and art, can be connected by their audience. Videos range from close up card magic through to deep cave exploration. TED shares knowledge and ideas at no cost to the consumer, with all videos uploaded online for free.

The events are free to the public, but bookings are essential. Anyone who misses out on a ticket to TEDxAdelaide live can participate online.

TEDxAdelaide will be streamed live via the RiAus website plus commentary and photos will be uploaded to Twitter, Facebook
and Flickr.
