How do you get into a solar car?

Alice Springs, NT

After a few displays at schools and communities throughout the NT, we noticed there are several questions that tend to pop up for the Aurora Solar Car team.

Southern Aurora, winner of the 1999 World Solar Challenge (at Tennant Creek Primary School on Wednesday).

I’ll bring more information about the car in another post, but in the meantime Aurora have a whole pile of information on their website, and you can also like them on Facebook.

Perhaps my favourite question, and one that isn’t immediately obvious when you look at the car, is well, just how do you get in?

In Southern Aurora the driver ends up in a reclined lying position. Drivers have to be extremely careful not to place any weight on the delicate solar panels, with the upper shell being only a couple of mm thick and very fragile.

Firstly a metal frame is hooked into the drivers compartment

Now the tricky part...

As you can see it’s a snug fit!
